| Special Economic Zones |
There are several Special Economic Zones within the People's Republic of China, specifically in Mainland China, as this excludes Hong Kong and Macau.
The word "special" mainly means special economic systems and policies.
In the PRC, the central government gives SEZs special policies and
flexible measures, allowing SEZs to utilize a special economic
management system. |
| | Special Administrative Regions | A Special Administrative Region (SAR) of the People's Republic of China is an administrative division of the People's Republic of China (PRC). Each SAR has a Chief Executive as head of the region and head of government. However each region's government is not fully internationally accredited, in as much as foreign policy and home defense are retained as the province of the motherland and central government.

development zones. In the 53 state-level new and high-tech development
zones, a great many sci-tech research results have been put into use in
production. By 2004, there were over 30,000 high-tech enterprises in
these zones, 20 of which had annual production values over 10 billion
yuan, more than 200 over five billion yuan, and 3,000 over 100 million
yuan. In these zones, the average growth in major economic indicators
has been maintained at 60 percent per annum for 12 years running, and
they have become important engines of national economic growth.
